In Dubai, where you sleep shapes the trip more than the hotel itself. The city is spread out and the districts are genuinely different from one another, so the same five-star rating can mean a very different holiday depending on which side of town it sits on.

Downtown puts you beside the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, which is convenient and busy, with little in the way of beach. Marina and JBR combine a walkable seafront promenade with restaurants and a beach, and they suit first visits well. The Palm is where the big resorts are, quiet and self-contained, and you will take a taxi for anything off the island.

Jumeirah is calmer and more residential with good beaches, and Deira, the old city, is the best value in Dubai and the most interesting to walk, but it is far from the beaches.
