Everything worth knowing

Half day or full dayA day trip to Abu Dhabi: how long do you really need

Abu Dhabi is about 130–140 km from Dubai, and each way takes 80–120 minutes depending on traffic. That means the driving alone is three to four hours there and back. So the first question is what you want to see.

Half a day, the mosque only: leave in the morning, visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and return to Dubai in the afternoon. Suits anyone coming mainly for the mosque, families with small children, or anyone with few days in Dubai.

A full day, the mosque and more: add the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, and in the afternoon Yas Island, with Ferrari World or Warner Bros. World. A long, rich day that suits couples, families with older children, and anyone with a week or more.

Three things that shape the plan:

  • Friday: the mosque is closed to visitors between 11:30 and 14:30. On a Friday it is better to arrive at 9:00 or to push the visit to the afternoon.
  • Monday: the Louvre is closed. On a Monday, plan the mosque and Yas Island.
  • Ramadan: visiting hours at the mosque change. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8.2.2027.

Anyone flying Etihad and landing in Abu Dhabi can save the whole drive, and visit the mosque on the way to Dubai.

Sheikh Zayed Grand MosqueMosque etiquette, beyond the dress code

The dress code is set out above. But according to the official site of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, there are a few more rules worth knowing before you arrive:

  • Food and drink: food and drink may not be brought into the mosque, not even water. The reason is protecting the marble and the carpets. Eat and drink before the visit or after it.
  • Photography: photography and filming for personal use are allowed in permitted areas. Professional photographers and media need advance approval.
  • Children: children are welcome, but must be closely supervised by their parents throughout the visit.
  • Entry: book an online entry permit in advance. Visitors from outside the Emirates pay an entry fee.
  • Parking: free parking is available in the southern car parks, near the entrances.

Free cultural tours: the centre runs free guided tours of 30–45 minutes, several times a day. On Friday there are fewer tours, because of the midday closure. Arrive at the tour's starting point before the set time.

And elsewhere in the complex: the visitor centre has an exhibition called Light and Peace, and Souq Al Jami' is a complex with shops and restaurants.

At religious sites, keep your voice low and dress modestly.

Louvre Abu DhabiThe Louvre: hours and planning the visit

The Louvre Abu Dhabi sits on Saadiyat Island, beneath an enormous dome. It is a natural stop after the mosque, before continuing to Yas Island.

Hours: according to the museum's site, the complex is open from 10:00 until midnight. The galleries and exhibitions close earlier: 18:30 on weekdays, and 20:30 at weekends. Last entry to the galleries is half an hour before closing. The museum is closed on Mondays.

What that means in practice:

  • On a day trip from Dubai, the gallery visit has to finish before 18:30 on a weekday. If you are also planning Yas Island, it is better to reach the Louvre around midday.
  • The outdoor complex and the dome are open until midnight, so you can also end the day there, after sunset.
  • Some galleries close from time to time to change works, according to the museum. If you are coming for a particular piece, check in advance.

With children: a large museum can exhaust younger children. It is better to choose a few halls in advance rather than trying to see everything. And remember the galleries close at 18:30 on weekdays, so do not leave the Louvre to the end of a long day.

The Louvre is indoors and air-conditioned, which makes it suitable for the summer months too, when the heat outside makes things hard. The table of weather by month, measured at Dubai airport, is on the Dubai weather page.

Yas IslandFerrari World or Warner Bros.: which suits you

The afternoon of an Abu Dhabi day trip usually belongs to Yas Island. There are two main parks there, and the choice depends on who is travelling:

  • Warner Bros. World: an indoor park with more than 30 rides, according to the official site. Because it is indoors and air-conditioned, it also suits very hot days and families with children of mixed ages.
  • Ferrari World: the park is open, but Formula Rossa, its famous roller coaster, is closed for maintenance, and according to the official site there is no end date. Anyone going for Formula Rossa needs to know that in advance.

What matters about Yas:

  • A few hours in a park does not fit into a day that also includes the mosque and the Louvre. If the park is the main event, it is worth dropping the Louvre, or splitting across two days.
  • After the park, the drive back to Dubai is another 80–120 minutes. Factor that in when you set your morning departure time.
  • Park opening hours vary by season. We only found the Warner Bros. hours on Time Out, not on the official site, so check before you set out.

Children who love water? Abu Dhabi has water parks too, but Dubai has Aquaventure, closer to your hotel.

Getting thereDubai to Abu Dhabi: organised tour, private car or bus

There are several ways to do a day trip to Abu Dhabi, and each suits a different kind of traveller:

  • An organised tour with a guide: hotel pick-up, the drive along the E11, and commentary along the way. The simplest option, with no logistics to think about.
  • A private car with a driver: you set the pace and the order. Suits families and anyone who wants to combine sites by choice. A private transfer between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is booked at least a day in advance, and there are vehicles of different sizes by number of passengers. Request a transfer quote
  • The Airport Express bus: from Ibn Battuta station in Dubai to Zayed International Airport, every hour on the hour, 24 hours a day. It mainly suits anyone flying from Abu Dhabi, and less so a day trip, because from there you still have to reach the sites.

Combining it with the flight: anyone flying Etihad from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi can plan the trip for the arrival day itself: land, drive straight to the mosque, and continue to Dubai in the evening. With luggage, that works best in a private car that waits for you on landing and stays with you until the hotel in Dubai.

Whichever you choose, dress for the mosque from the morning, or bring a change of clothes, and book an entry permit in advance. If you want help planning, send us the date and the number of travellers on WhatsApp.

More in Abu DhabiWhat else is worth seeing in Abu Dhabi, beyond the mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is why most travellers head to Abu Dhabi, but the capital of the Emirates offers a great deal more. Anyone with a few free hours, or a Monday in the city, can choose by interest.

Palaces and history

  • Qasr Al Watan: a working presidential palace opened to the public, with grand halls, domes and ornamentation. From 35 AED per person.
  • Qasr Al Hosn: the oldest building in the city, a fort turned museum that tells the story of Abu Dhabi. From 24 AED per person.
  • Emirates Palace: the famous hotel, which you can also experience over a meal or afternoon tea.

Museums on Saadiyat Island

RoutesThree day-trip routes, by style

There is no single right way to do Abu Dhabi in a day. Here are three routes, each for a different kind of traveller. All of them start at the mosque, because the morning is the most pleasant time in the courtyard.

The culture route: mosque, palace and Louvre

Morning at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, midday at Qasr Al Watan, and the afternoon at the Louvre. A day of architecture, art and history, without a single ride. Suits couples and adults. Note: on Mondays the Louvre is closed, and then you swap it for the Zayed National Museum.

The family route: mosque and Yas Island

A short visit to the mosque in the morning, and from there straight to Yas Island for the rest of the day. Warner Bros. World is indoors and suits all ages, from 338 AED per person. Yas Waterworld suits hot days, from 258 AED per person. And SeaWorld for sea-life lovers, from 306 AED per person. Choose one park, not two.

The museum route: a day on Saadiyat Island

After the mosque, drive to Saadiyat Island, home to several of the most important museums in the region, close to one another: the Louvre, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum and teamLab Phenomena. Two or three of them in one day is a lot, but possible. The Natural History Museum and teamLab are particular favourites with children.

What all three have in common

  • Leave Dubai early, to reach the mosque before the crowds.
  • Dress according to the mosque's code from the morning.
  • Do not try to squeeze in more than three stops. The drive back to Dubai is long.
When to visitThe mosque in the morning, at sunset or in the evening

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque looks completely different depending on the hour, and that affects not only the photographs but the whole experience.

Morning

The light is soft, the courtyard is cooler, and it is usually less crowded than the afternoon. This is the most comfortable time for families with children, and for anyone continuing to a long day of other sites. In summer the morning is almost essential: the white marble in the courtyard gets very hot by midday.

Sunset

This is the hour when the mosque turns gold and pink, and the surrounding pools reflect the domes. It is also the most sought-after hour, and therefore the busiest. If you want sunset, arrive early and book the entry permit in advance.

Evening

After dark the mosque is lit with special lighting, and its white stands out against the dark sky. The heat drops and the atmosphere is quiet. It is a particularly good option for anyone who has had a day of attractions and wants to end it at the mosque before driving back to Dubai. Note that you will get back late.

Friday and Ramadan

On Friday the mosque is closed to visitors at midday, and during Ramadan the hours change. Always check the current hours on the official site before you set your departure time.

Photography tips

  • The classic shot is taken from the edge of the pools, with the domes reflected.
  • Photograph only in permitted areas, and do not photograph worshippers.
  • Disrespectful poses and provocative photos are not allowed. Keep photography respectful.
By seasonA day trip to Abu Dhabi in summer and in winter

Abu Dhabi works in any season, but the planning is very different between January and August.

In the comfortable season, November to March

This is when you can also enjoy being outdoors: a long walk in the mosque courtyard, the Corniche promenade along the sea, Jubail Mangrove Park and even a picnic. The day is shorter and the sun sets early, around half past five, so it is worth leaving Dubai early in the morning.

In spring and autumn

April–May and September–October are already hot. Do the mosque early in the morning, and move on to indoor places: the Louvre, museums or a park.

In summer, June to September

The heat in Abu Dhabi is similar to Dubai, 40°C and above, with high humidity. This is the time to build the whole day around air-conditioned places:

  • The mosque early in the morning or after sunset.
  • In the middle of the day, Warner Bros. World, which is entirely indoors, or Snow Abu Dhabi, an indoor snow park, from 194 AED per person.
  • Air-conditioned museums on Saadiyat Island.
  • Plenty of water, a hat, and short transitions between the car and the entrance.

And in any season: check the weather for your dates on the Dubai weather page. The picture in Abu Dhabi is very similar.

With childrenAbu Dhabi with children: how to do it right

A day trip to Abu Dhabi with children is a long day, with three hours or more of driving. Planned well, it can be one of the most memorable days of the holiday.

At the mosque

Children are welcome at the mosque, under close supervision. They also need modest dress, and the exact rules for children are worth checking on the mosque's official site. Tell them in advance what they are about to see, and why it matters to keep quiet. An hour's visit, without a long tour, suits most children.

What children love in Abu Dhabi

Tips for the drive

  • Leave after breakfast, with snacks and water in the car. Remember that food and drink are not allowed inside the mosque.
  • In a private car you can stop when you need to, and request safety seats in advance.
  • Plan to be back in Dubai before the children collapse. A short, successful day beats a long, exhausting one.

Cost and staying overWhat a day trip costs, and whether to stay the night

The cost of a day trip to Abu Dhabi depends on two decisions: how you travel, and what you go into.

The journey

  • An organised tour: a day trip to Abu Dhabi starts at 84 AED per person.
  • A private car with a driver: a private transfer between Dubai and Abu Dhabi starts at 445 AED per vehicle, and the price is split between the passengers. For a family or a group of friends that is often the better value.

Entry tickets

Entry to the mosque itself requires an online permit in advance. Prices for the other sites, cheapest first: Jubail Mangrove Park from 15 AED, Qasr Al Hosn from 24 AED, Qasr Al Watan from 35 AED, the Louvre from 60 AED, and the Yas Island theme parks from 258 AED up to 338 AED per person. All prices are starting prices, as at 26.9.2026.

Should you stay a night in Abu Dhabi?

If you have a week or more, a night or two in Abu Dhabi can turn a pressured day into a relaxed experience. The advantages:

  • The mosque at sunset and in the evening, without thinking about the drive back.
  • A whole day at Yas Island, or a whole day in the museums on Saadiyat Island.
  • Quiet beaches, and hotels with a different character from Dubai's.

The decision depends on what matters to you. The full comparison between the two cities is in the Dubai or Abu Dhabi guide, and the list of hotels by area is on the Hotels and areas page.

The city itselfThe Corniche, the palaces and the towers: urban Abu Dhabi

Most day trips skip the city centre itself, and that is a shame. Anyone with an hour or two free between the mosque and Saadiyat, or at the end of the day, will find a pleasant, spacious city, very different from Dubai.

The Corniche

A long promenade along the sea, with lawns, cycle paths, a public beach and a view of the Abu Dhabi skyline. This is where residents come out to walk in the evening, and you can feel it: the atmosphere is relaxed and family-oriented. In winter, a walk along the Corniche towards sunset is a perfect way to end the day.

Emirates Palace and the towers

At the end of the Corniche stands Emirates Palace, one of the most famous hotels in the region, with domes, gardens and a gilded lobby. Opposite it rise the Etihad Towers, one of which has a high observation deck over the city and the sea.

History in the centre

In the heart of the city, among the towers, stands Qasr Al Hosn, the fort from which Abu Dhabi grew. The contrast between the ancient white walls and the glass towers around them is one of the most striking sights in the city.

How to fit it in

In a private car it is easy to stop at the Corniche and Qasr Al Hosn on the way between the mosque and Saadiyat. On an organised tour, check in advance which stops are included. And on a day when you are staying over in Abu Dhabi, the Corniche in the evening is a must.
