About the hotel

Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is the sail-shaped hotel that rises out of the sea opposite Jumeirah Beach. According to the hotel's website, its shape was born in 1993 from a sketch inspired by the sail of a passing ship, as a tribute to Dubai's maritime heritage and its pearl divers. The hotel opened in 1999, and has just 197 duplex suites, with no standard rooms at all. It was among the first hotels to offer a personal butler for every suite.

The hotel is known for its interior design. According to Euronews, it has about 86,500 hand-applied Swarovski crystals, more than 30 types of Statuario marble and roughly 1,790 square meters of 24-karat gold leaf. On the helipad, about 210 meters up, Roger Federer and Andre Agassi played tennis in 2005, and in 2023 a light aircraft landed on it. The hotel's well-known restaurants included Al Muntaha, and Al Mahara, built around a large aquarium.

In April 2026 the hotel closed for a renovation of about 18 months, its first since opening, after more than 25 years of continuous operation. The reopening is expected around October 2027. The renovation is led by French architect Tristan Auer, who previously renovated the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. According to the hotel's website, most of the original design is being preserved, including the gold leaf, the marble and the crystals, alongside new dedicated fabrics and quiet technology upgrades. The entire hotel is closed during the renovation, and no stays can be booked there.

Until it reopens, the hotel's website offers stays at other Jumeirah hotels in the city. On the same beach, right next to Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab are open, and both offer views of the sail. Anyone coming to Dubai mainly for the photo of the sail can still get it from the beach and the neighboring hotels during the renovation.
